The Berrien County Historical Association is raising funds as it prepares to celebrate 50 years.
Association Director Rhiannon Cizon tells us the “Nifty! We’re Fifty Giving Campaign” is underway through the end of the year.
“So the idea is to help offset our costs,” Cizon said. “Things are getting more expensive for everyone. They’re also getting more expensive for non-profits. So we do need a little bit of help.”
The goal is to raise $50,000 and the association says it’s not quite halfway through the goal, so time is running out. Cizon says support is needed to run all of the History Center’s programming.
“The only way we can do our job is if we have the money to do it. Everything from environmental management to programs to activities for students when they come do their field trips.”
In 1967, the Berrien County Historical Commission was formed to save and renovate the 1839 courthouse in Berrien Springs. The following year, after receiving 501c3 status and the county’s purchase of the building, fundraising and renovations started. Over the next 50 years, the acquisition of surrounding properties united the Courthouse Square and created the largest historic site in the county.
Cizon says with the 50-year milestone here, all supporters are asked to give. You can donate online, over the phone, or via mail.
