Governor Gretchen Whitmer is welcoming legislative approval of the new state budget.

Whitmer says it’s a balanced, bipartisan spending plan that’s a win for everyone.

We made the biggest roads deal in Michigan history so we can keep fixing those damn roads,” Whitmer said. “We’re also lowering costs by rolling back the retirement tax on our seniors, ending taxes on Social Security, expanding the Working Families Tax Credit, protecting Medicaid, and getting rid of taxes on tips and overtime.”

Whitmer support the 24% marijuana tax that will be used to help pay for road repairs. She adds the education budget includes a $442 per-pupil funding increase.

We’re making the biggest budget investment in schools in Michigan history. More money to reduce class sizes, support teachers, provide free school meals, and keep kids safe and healthy.”

Republican state Senator Aric Nesbitt, who’s running for governor, voted against the budget saying it doesn’t cut enough wasteful Democratic spending. In another vote, he did support shifting state gasoline tax proceeds to fully support road funding.
