Tigers 4, Guardians 2 – Tigers beat Guardians 4-2 to end 8-game skid and move back into tie for AL Central lead
Jahmai Jones led off the game with a home run and the Detroit Tigers snapped an eight-game losing streak, beating Cleveland 4-2 on Thursday night to move back into a tie with the Guardians for the AL Central lead. Detroit and Cleveland are 86-73 with three games left to play. The Guardians hold the tiebreaker after going 8-5 in the season series. The Tigers head to Boston, where the Red Sox have a one-game lead for the AL’s second wild card. The Guardians will host Texas, which has lost nine of 10. Wenceel Pérez and Riley Greene also homered off Cleveland starter Parker Messick (3-1). Brant Hurter (4-3) got the win, and Will Vest picked up his 22nd save in 29 opportunities.

Yankees 5, White Sox 3 – Yankees beat White Sox 5-3 behind Stanton and Rodón to stay tied with Toronto
Giancarlo Stanton grounded a go-ahead, three-run double and the New York Yankees beat the Chicago White Sox 5-3 to remain tied with Toronto atop the AL East going into the final three games of the regular season. Carlos Rodón pitched six steady innings for his 18th win and Austin Wells added an RBI double off the right-center fence in the seventh as the playoff-bound Yankees finished a three-game sweep to move a season-high 23 games above .500. New York, which has won five straight and eight of nine, is assured home-field advantage in the Wild Card Series if it can’t edge the Blue Jays for the division title. The teams share the best record in the American League at 91-68. Toronto holds the head-to-head tiebreaker.

Mets 8, Cubs 5 – Lindor homers to join 30-30 club as Mets beat Cubs 8-5 to remain in playoff position
Francisco Lindor homered to reach the 30-30 milestone for the second time, Brett Baty went deep and the New York Mets beat the Chicago Cubs 8-5 to remain in position for the final National League wild card. The Mets built a six-run lead and withstood a shaky outing by rookie Nolan McLean. They remained a game ahead of Cincinnati in the playoff race, with the Reds beating Pittsburgh 2-1. Chicago’s Shota Imanaga got tagged for a season-high eight runs in 5 2/3 innings. Seiya Suzuki homered twice and Dansby Swanson also connected for the Cubs, who have lost six of seven.

MLB – Tigers and Guardians tied atop AL Central with 3 games left
The Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Guardians are both 86-73 and tied atop the American League’s Central Division with three games remaining. The last time the division was remotely close after 159 games was in 2014, when the Tigers had a two-game lead on the Kansas City Royals. The last time the AL Central was tied at this point was 2006 when the Tigers and Minnesota Twins had 95-64 records. The Tigers snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 4-2 win over Cleveland on Thursday night and go into Boston in control of their own destiny. Even though the Guardians were unable to sweep the Tigers for the second time in less than two weeks, they still got what they wanted by taking two out of three games. Cleveland hosts Texas beginning Friday.

MLB – Umps take Tyler Gilbert’s glove after Sox reliever gets checked for sticky stuff
Tyler Gilbert’s glove was taken away by umpires who found it too sticky when the Chicago White Sox reliever entered Thursday night’s game against the New York Yankees. With the White Sox leading 3-1 in the fifth inning, Gilbert was summoned from the bullpen to replace starter Davis Martin at Yankee Stadium. Second base umpire Phil Cuzzi performed a routine inspection for illegal substances before Gilbert reached the pitcher’s mound. Crew chief Dan Bellino, working at third, also took a look and decided something wasn’t right. Gilbert’s glove was confiscated, but the left-hander was permitted to pitch with a different one.

Seahawks 23, Cardinals 20 – Jason Myers boots 52-yard FG lifting Seahawks to 23-20 win over Cardinals
Jason Myers made a 52-yard field goal as time expired, Sam Darnold threw for 242 yards and a touchdown, and the Seattle Seahawks withstood a late rally by Kyler Murray and the Cardinals to beat Arizona 23-20. The Seahawks blew a 14-point fourth-quarter lead but still won their eighth straight over their NFC West rivals. The Cardinals trailed 20-6 midway through the fourth. Murray tied it with touchdown passes to Marvin Harrison Jr. and Emari Demercado, but left enough time on the clock for Darnold, who hit Jaxon Smith-Njigba for a 22-yard gain to get into Myers’ range.

NFL – Lions and Browns: a matchup of balanced, offense and run-stuffing, stingy defense
The Detroit Lions got their groove back on offense, reviving a balanced attack that looks a lot like it did last year as the NFL’s highest-scoring unit after a sputtering start in Green Bay. Meanwhile, Cleveland has a surprisingly stingy defense. Detroit expects to be challenged by the Browns when Jared Goff hands the ball off and drops back to pass on Sunday at Ford Field, even though it has restored some respect around the league with two straight wins. The Lions were favored by 10 points on Thursday, according to BetMGM Sportsbook.

NFL – Caleb Williams, Bears look to build on win over Cowboys when they visit Raiders
Caleb Williams impressed many with his performance against the Cowboys, throwing four touchdowns in a dominant victory. The Bears’ game against the Raiders on Sunday will test whether that was a breakthrough or one-time event. Chicago coach Ben Johnson praised Williams’ approach, noting his recent NFC offensive player of the week award. Meanwhile, Raiders coach Pete Carroll acknowledged Williams’ athleticism and potential. The Bears’ defense also showed improvement against Dallas, forcing four takeaways. However, their running game still struggles. The Raiders, on the other hand, need to address issues with their special teams.

Golf – Ryder Cup will start with a bang: Bryson DeChambeau with fiery Jon Rahm
The Ryder Cup is ready to roar at Bethpage Black and that shouldn’t be too difficult on the spectators. The matches get underway on Friday with Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas in the opening foursomes session against fiery Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton. DeChambeau says the idea is to send a message. That’s what U.S. captain Keegan Bradley has done by sending out his most entertaining and energetic twosome on a course with a reputation for a rowdy gallery. And then add President Donald Trump into the mix and it should be quite a loud start to the Ryder Cup.
