Gary Dean Gitchell, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 20, 2025, in his hometown of Niles, Michigan, at the age of 85. Born to Marvin Duane Gitchell and Vivian Gene (East) Bolton on March 13, 1940, Gary was a lifelong resident of Niles, where he established deep roots and contributed significantly to the community he loved.

Gary was a devoted family man, survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Kathryn Marie (Sykes) Gitchell, his daughter Bethney (Richard) Davidson of Bel Air, Maryland, his sister Joan VanLue, and half-brother Dennis Gitchell. His legacy continues through his granddaughter, Rebecca (Dylan) Schaeffer, and his great-grandson, Leo Scott Schaeffer, who brought him profound joy.

In 1976, Gary founded Gitchell Sign Company, a business that would serve the Niles community for nearly 27 years. His work ethic, creativity, and dedication to his craft earned him respect and admiration from both clients and colleagues. Gary’s commitment to his community extended beyond his business as he was actively involved in various associations, always eager to lend a helping hand or share his expertise.

Gary was known for his artistic, imaginative and gifted talents, with the ability to build almost anything—a true craftsman. His skills were not only evident in his work but also in his hobbies. Gary loved decoy carving, painting with pastels, boat building and crafting furniture.

Gary’s interests were as vast as his talents. He enjoyed sailing on lake Michigan, playing golf, fishing, camping, and boating on the river. Gary embraced life through adventure, traveling widely and seeking new experiences wherever he went. In his later years, nothing brought him greater joy than spending time with his wife, Kathy, and family, creating cherished memories together.

Those wishing to make a memorial donation may do so to the Wounded Warrior Project at 4899 Belfort Road Suite 300, Jacksonville, FL 32256.
