Community support continues for the Lakeshore JV football player injured in last week’s game against Kalamazoo Central.

As WSJM reported previously, the player – Colton Mims – suffered two broken vertebrae after a player from the opposing team jumped on him after Mims was already on the ground. The Kalamazoo Central player has reportedly been disciplined, but the school district has offered no details citing student confidentiality.

Friday is the “War by the Shore” with the Lakeshore Lancers versus the St. Joseph Bears, and as part of that, the owner of the Sandbar & Grille in St. Joseph, Tom Jennings, has decided to dedicate proceeds from sales to help the Mims family pay medical expenses. Jennings made the pledge on the WSJM Morning Show with Ken & Friends to allocate a portion of all sales made on Friday.

“Twenty percent of everything that comes in, I’m gonna donate. We’ll make $1 ,000 there anyway. It’s a terrible thing to watch. Football can be a brutal sport. I love football, but I hate to see that. That was uncalled for, obviously. Ridiculous.”

The Mims have set up a GoFundMe page to collect donations. You can click the link for more information or to donate.
