What’s known as “Project T” will officially break ground next Tuesday, September 30, marking the start of construction on 28 new homes for families in Benton Harbor. City officials say the project, located on the former Mercy Hospital campus at 960 Agard Avenue, will feature 14 duplex buildings offering two- and three-bedroom homes for families earning 60–120% of the area median income.
According to city officials, the homes will incorporate sustainable design elements and specialty financing options, creating pathways to homeownership for local families. Project T’s long-term vision calls for up to 77 homes, along with a future childcare center.
Developed through a partnership between Renovare Development and Harbor Habitat for Humanity, the project brings together public and private investment from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority, Whirlpool Foundation, Michigan Growth Office, and the City of Benton Harbor.
Speakers planned for the groundbreaking include representatives from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority, Renovare Development, Harbor Habitat for Humanity, Whirlpool Corporation and Whirlpool Foundation, the Michigan Growth Office, and the City of Benton Harbor, along with other community partners.
Event organizers say Project T is about honoring the area’s incredible history and heart while creating new opportunities. “…homes that families can afford, spaces where children can thrive, and neighborhoods that reflect the strength of the people who will call this place home for generations to come.”
