Former lieutenant governor expecting budget impasse to come down to the wire

A former top Michigan official expects budget talks to go down to the wire. Michigan could have a government shutdown on October 1 if there’s no budget deal by then.

Former Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley says there are still big issues like rising taxes or reducing spending. He says the state has lost muscle memory when it comes to living within its means because there’s been a long period of revenue growth.

That’s not where it’s at today,”Calley said. “There are changes in federal law that affect the state, but also a general slowing in the economy. And so I expect this one will continue to be negotiated and worked on right up until the end.”

Calley, now president and CEO of the Small Business Association of Michigan, says a delay in the state budget will not affect its work, but it will affect small businesses if their costs go up as a result.
