Pamela Dee Hurst, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully on August 27, 2025, at Corewell Health Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph, Michigan. She was 68 years old.
A private Celebration of Life Service will be taking place. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Starks Family Funeral Homes and Cremation Services – Clark Chapel. Those wishing to leave an online condolence for the family may do so at www.clarkch.com.
Pamela was born on October 15, 1956, in South Bend, Indiana, to the late Dick DeVee and Elsie Mae Louise Mather. She grew up in her hometown of Dowagiac, Michigan, where she built a foundation of faith, family, and determination that carried through her entire life.
In her youth, Pamela was a gifted athlete, excelling in track and field and winning numerous medals. She also made history in Dowagiac by helping start the very first girls’ basketball team, breaking barriers for future generations of young women in sports. Beyond athletics, she was a talented artist, writer, and photographer. Her passion for creativity and dedication to hard work led her to freelance for The Herald-Palladium newspaper in St. Joseph, Michigan, while putting herself through nursing school. Pamela went on to graduate from Andrews University in Berrien Springs with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing.
Pamela devoted her career to caring for others. She was, in every sense, the kind of nurse that patients never forgot – skilled, compassionate, and truly gifted in her calling. To her family, she will always be remembered as the best nurse they ever knew.
Beyond her career, Pamela was deeply rooted in her faith. Her knowledge of Scripture was profound; she could recount any story from the Bible with detail and passion, and she lived her life with that same conviction and spirit.
Pamela is survived by her husband – Dale Eugene Hurst; her daughter – Brittany Elizabeth Hurst; her grandchildren – Levi Jase Webb Hurst and Luke Ryland Hurst; and her siblings – Ricky Mather and Brenda Baker. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Her legacy lives on in the love she poured into her family, the countless lives she touched through nursing, and the example she set as a woman of faith.
