Sheriff’s departments from Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren counties will be among police agencies taking part in a major training exercise in Saugatuck and Douglas this weekend.

The Allegan County Sheriff’s Department says it will team up with departments from six surrounding counties and local organizations for a water-rescue and underwater search drill.

The exercise will take place Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. along the Kalamazoo River and nearby waterfronts.

Boaters and paddlers should expect to see dive boats, rescue teams, and marked training areas. The river will stay open, but there may be temporary safety holds or one-way traffic. Police are asking boaters to slow down near their operations, obey directions from marine units, and watch for diver-down flags.

The exercise will proceed rain or shine unless hazardous weather creates unsafe conditions. If conditions require postponement, an update will be issued
