Lincoln Township will be formalizing some rules prohibiting e-bikes and other motorized recreational vehicles on its trails and in its parks.
At last month’s meeting, trustees were told the question is whether an ordinance will be needed to regulate the vehicles, or if that could be accomplished with something more informal, like a simple rule.
Speaking this week, Township Manager Ralph Bansen said after some study, it looks like an ordinance won’t be needed and just posting rules at the parks will work. He told us these e-bikes have sparked some comment from residents.
“We were having some safety concerns and some concerns about how fast they were traveling on the non-motorized trails and in our parks,” Bansen said. “So we had a lot of residents that were concerned about their family’s safety due to the speed of the e-bikes and how they’re being operated.”
Bansen told trustees Tuesday he’s checked with other townships, and they’ve found simply posting rules that prohibit the use of e-bikes and similar vehicles like hoverboards on trails has worked pretty well for them.
However, the question of how to handle the e-bikes on sidewalks is another matter that will need a little more review. Bansen will report back on that at a future meeting.
