South Haven Area Emergency Services is gearing up for Fire Prevention Week, October 5 through 11, with this year’s theme being “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.”

The department says many home electronics, from phones and laptops to power tools and toys, use lithium-ion batteries that can overheat and catch fire if damaged or improperly used.

As part of the campaign, firefighters will visit schools to talk with students about fire safety, and the department will host its annual Fire Prevention Fun Fair on October 9 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the firehouse on Blue Star Highway. The event will feature games, food, activities for the kids, and a live burn demonstration of a battery showing how quickly a fire can spread.

SHAES says it’s always accepting donations to support school visits, educational materials, and the Fun Fair. Anyone who wants to help can call the department.
