Packers 27, Lions 13 – Jordan Love starts fast and Parsons gets a sack as Packers defeat Lions 27-13
Jordan Love threw a pair of touchdown passes and Micah Parsons produced a sack in his Green Bay debut as the Packers delivered an exceptional defensive performance in a 27-13 victory over the Detroit Lions. The Packers won their 13th consecutive home opener. Green Bay scored its first three drives to pull ahead for good. The Packers’ convincing win over the two-time defending NFC North champions represented a fresh start after they went 1-5 in divisional games last season. The Lions didn’t reach the end zone until the final minute. Jared Goff went 31 of 39 for 225 yards with a touchdown and an interception. David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs were held to a combined 44 yards on 20 carries.
Colts 33, Dolphins 8 – Jones shines as Colts snap 11-game opening-day winless streak, beating Dolphins 33-8
Daniel Jones ran for two touchdowns and threw for another, and the Indianapolis Colts snapped the NFL’s longest active opening-day winless streak at 11 with a 33-8 rout of the Miami Dolphins. The Colts are 1-0 for the first time since 2013 and did it in Jones’ first game with the team. He went 22 of 29 for 272 yards as Indy scored on all seven possessions. New defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo also had a splashy debut as the Colts came within 6 1/2 minutes of delivering their first shutout since December 2021. Nothing went right for the Dolphins as their Week 1 winning streak ended at four.

NFL – Lions’ offense struggles in first game since coordinator Ben Johnson’s departure
The Detroit Lions apparently are going to need some time to adapt to the departure of offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. Johnson left to become head coach of the NFC North rival Chicago Bears after helping the Lions win a second straight division title and score an NFL-leading 33.2 points per game last season. In their first game of the post-Johnson era, the Lions didn’t score a touchdown until 55 seconds remained in a 27-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers. The slow start could increase the scrutiny on coordinator John Morton. Detroit also lost three of last season’s starting offensive linemen.
NFL – Lions WR Jameson Williams agrees to contract extension
Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams has agreed to terms on a contract extension as he attempts to follow up on his breakthrough season from a year ago. The Lions announced the extension Sunday before the two-time defending NFC North champions began their season against the Green Bay Packers. The Lions didn’t reveal terms. Multiple reports said Williams had agreed to a three-year extension worth up to $83 million. The 24-year-old Williams is coming off a 2024 season in which he caught 58 passes for 1,001 yards and seven touchdowns.
NFL – McCarthy’s time has arrived. He’ll face his favorite childhood team, the Bears
Former Michigan Wolverine and National Champion Quarterback J.J. McCarthy will play in his first NFL game on Monday night for the Minnesota Vikings when they visit the Chicago Bears. He grew up rooting for the Bears in the Chicago area. The Vikings were the opponent when McCarthy made his first visit to Soldier Field as a 4-year-old with his father. McCarthy was the 10th pick in the 2024 draft. His debut was delayed by a knee injury that required surgery and kept him out of his entire rookie season. The Vikings have a Super Bowl aspiration with several Pro Bowl players despite turning to an untested quarterback.
Tennis – Alcaraz beats rival Sinner for a 6th Slam title and the No. 1 ranking
Carlos Alcaraz has reasserted his superiority over Jannik Sinner with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory in the U.S. Open final. Sunday’s showdown was the third Grand Slam tournament in a row where these elite, young rivals met to decide the champion. Alcaraz claimed his second trophy at Flushing Meadows and sixth overall at a major. President Donald Trump sat in a sponsor’s suite in Arthur Ashe Stadium and received a mix of cheers and boos when he offered a wave beforehand and again when he was shown on videoboards after the first set. The match’s start was delayed by about a half-hour because of extra security.

Pinch-hitter Josh Bell hit a three-run homer and the Washington Nationals rallied with five runs in the ninth inning off Cubs closer Daniel Palencia to stun Chicago 6-3 on Sunday. Chicago entered the ninth leading 3-1, but Palencia failed to retire any of the five National hitters he faced before leaving with an undisclosed injury. Robert Hassell III led off with a homer to cut it to 3-2. Following an infield hit by CJ Abrams and walk to James Wood, Bell lofted the first pitch he saw for his 17th homer. NCAAFB – Michigan freshman QB Bryce Underwood stifled in 24-13 loss to Oklahoma
Bryce Underwood, Michigan’s true freshman quarterback, faced challenges Saturday night. He struggled in Michigan’s 24-13 loss at Oklahoma, completing only 9 of 24 passes for 142 yards. Last week, he impressed with 251 yards and a touchdown in a victory over New Mexico. Michigan coach Sherrone Moore said the team failed to find rhythm against Oklahoma, and it wasn’t just Underwood’s fault. Oklahoma coach Brent Venables had praised Underwood, comparing him to Trevor Lawrence. Underwood also had a heated moment with running back Justice Haynes, but they resolved it. Haynes later scored a 75-yard touchdown.
NASCAR – Denny Hamlin advances in playoffs at Gateway with 200th Cup win for Toyota
Denny Hamlin won from the pole position at World Wide Technology Raceway, playing the strategy perfectly to lead the final 25 laps in his series-high fifth victory this season. With his 59th career win, Hamlin advanced to the second round of the Cup Series playoffs and joined Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Chase Briscoe, who finished second. Hamlin made his final stop with 44 laps remaining, and he cycled to the front on a caution 15 laps later. The Virginia native seized the lead from Brad Keselowski on the restart, delivering the 200th win in NASCAR’s premier series for Toyota.

The Los Angeles Sparks won a record 18 straight in the regular season on their way to the 2001 WNBA title. Angel Reese didn’t play for Chicago. The team announced Friday that Reese was suspended for the first half of the Sunday’s game for making comments “detrimental to the team” and then at halftime announced that the two-time WNBA All-Star would not play in the second half due to a back injury.
