Dickinson Park in St. Joseph should have a new restroom facility by spring following action by city commissioners Monday.

At their regular meeting, commissioners approved a $607,000 bid from Pearson Construction for the building, which Public Works Director Greg Grothous tells us is coming about shortly after improvements were made by St. Joseph Public Schools to the baseball fields at the park.

We’ll be building a four family style restroom building at Dickinson Park,” Grothous said. “So there won’t be a male female side. It’s just family style. So anybody can use any of the four. And then improving the parking lot. Currently, there is parking there. It’s a gravel lot.”

That will be paved.

The school district leases the park for its baseball program, and Grothous says the city and schools have been working closely together on various improvements there.

They wanted to do a restroom as part of their larger project, but cost became an issue. The city said, ‘Hey, it’s on our master plan. We’ll apply for some grants and see what happens.'”

The city secured a $260,000 grant for the project.

Construction on the restrooms is expected to start this month, and Grothous said they could be finished by February. The parking lot paving will take place in the spring.
