Labor Day Weekend marks the final days of summer, and for many boaters, the last ride of the season. But police remind everyone to stay safe when go out on the water.

Lieutenant Brian Burwell of the Oakland County sheriff’s Department says to ensure you have a well-fitting life jacket.

“Life jackets float, you don’t, you know,” Burwell said. “It’s like a seatbelt in the car. If you don’t wear it, it doesn’t work. And people find themselves out in the water and they’re having a great, enjoyable day, and then all of a sudden they’re thrust into one of these life and death situations. Drowning is a silent death.”

Burwell said the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department has responded to four drownings in lakes this summer, along with 18 near drownings.
