NCAAFB – Michigan State opens 2nd season under Jonathan Smith vs. Western Michigan
Michigan State opens its second season under coach Jonathan Smith on Friday night against Western Michigan. The Spartans are favored by 20 1/2 points, according to BetMGM. Western Michigan lost to South Alabama 30-23 in Salute to Veterans Bowl to close last year, falling to 6-7 in coach Lance Taylor’s second season. Michigan State lost to Rutgers 41-14, losing for fourth time in five games to fall to 5-7 in third straight losing year in Smith’s debut season.

NCAAFB – Bryce Underwood set to become 4th freshman to start at QB for No. 14 Michigan
No. 14 Michigan opens the season Saturday night at home against New Mexico. Bryce Underwood is expected to take the Wolverines’ first snap, becoming the fourth freshman quarterback to start in program history. Michigan beat No. 11 Alabama 19-13, closing season with three straight wins to finish 8-5. The winning streak included a fourth straight win over rival Ohio State in coach Sherrone Moore’s debut season. New Mexico lost at Hawaii 38-30 to finish 5-7 for its eighth straight losing season under coach Bronco Mendenhall, who left after one season to lead Utah State.

NCAAFB – No. 10 Miami hoping for ‘maniacal’ setting when hosting No. 6 Notre Dame
A renewed rivalry, a sold-out stadium, national television audience, prime-time matchup of teams who expect to contend for spots in the College Football Playoff. That’s how many might describe the meeting between No. 6 Notre Dame and No. 10 Miami when they collide in a season-opener on Sunday night. Notre Dame made the CFP national title game last season. Miami felt like it was snubbed by the committee that chose that event’s 12-team field. The Irish will start untried CJ Carr at quarterback while Miami is replacing No. 1 pick Cam Ward with Georgia transfer Carson Beck.

NFL – Micah Parsons traded to Green Bay from the Cowboys after contract dispute
Micah Parsons is headed to the Green Bay Packers after a blockbuster trade, leaving the Dallas Cowboys following a lengthy contract dispute. A person with knowledge of the details said Parsons and the Packers have agreed on a record-setting $188 million, four-year contract that includes $136 million guaranteed. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the terms haven’t been announced. Parsons, a two-time All-Pro edge rusher, becomes the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history.

NFL – With new coach and O-line, Bears bank on Williams to emerge as franchise QB
The Chicago Bears were a disappointment last season. But with new coach Ben Johnson and a rebuilt offensive line, they believe Caleb Williams now has the support he needs to develop into the sort of quarterback they envision him becoming. Johnson worked well with Jared Goff as Detroit’s offensive coordinator, helping him re-emerge as one of the NFL’s top QBs. The interior of the offensive line has a different look after general manager Ryan Poles gave it a makeover, highlighted by the trade with Kansas City for two-time All-Pro guard Joe Thuney. Now, Williams needs to start emerging as a franchise quarterback.

Tennis – Nerves and pressure get to Coco Gauff at the US Open before she wins again
Coco Gauff kept wiping the tears welling in her eyes between points in her second-round match at the U.S. Open. She was trying to stay composed and trying to give herself a chance to win Thursday night. Gauff’s serving troubles were again an issue, just as they were two nights earlier, just as they’ve been for a while now. The two-time Grand Slam champion teamed up with a new coach recently to try to fix that aspect of her game, and while there clearly is still work to be done, Gauff did figure out how to stay in the tournament, beating Donna Vekic 7-6 (5), 6-2 in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Tennis – Tommy Paul beats Nuno Borges in nearly 4 1/2-hour match that ends at 2 a.m.
Tommy Paul and Nuno Borges played well into Friday morning in another post-midnight marathon classic match at the U.S. Open. Paul won the first two sets and had a couple of match point chances to close it out in three. The American seeded 14th instead lost the third and fourth sets and was tied in the fifth after going up 3-0. Paul broke Borges one final time to finish off a 7-6 (6), 6-3, 5-7, 5-7, 7-5 victory. The match that began as the Thursday nightcap at Arthur Ashe Stadium lasted 4 hours, 25 minutes and ended at 1:46 am. It was the 17th-latest finish in tournament history, joining the history books as the second-latest finish in the second round.

Grand Haven 38, Lakeshore 0
Lakeshore struggled to find any offensive rhythm in a 38-0 loss at Grand Haven, as the Buccaneers’ defense smothered the Lancers throughout the night. Quarterback Eli Wheaton completed 13 passes for 43 yards, with Jonah Chavez hauling in four receptions, but Lakeshore managed just 28 yards rushing on 24 attempts. Despite earning 14 first downs, turnovers proved costly, with three lost fumbles and an interception returned 50 yards that set up another Grand Haven touchdown. The Lancers’ defense had some bright spots, including Drew Scholton’s five tackles and a 48-yard punt, but the unit was on the field often as the Buccaneers controlled field position and capitalized on mistakes.
