A Cass County man is facing serious time behind bars for the theft of a walnut tree.
The Cass County Prosecutor’s office says Trevor Wallace was set to go to trial on a felony charge of concealing stolen property over $1,000 as a habitual third offense when he entered the plea this week just as jury selection was about to begin.
The stolen property was what prosecutors call “an extremely valuable, fully mature, hardwood walnut tree” that went missing from its owner’s property back in December. And that wasn’t the first walnut tree they’d had had stolen, either.
The prosecutor’s office says Wallace has a long criminal record that includes charges for things like home invasion and possession of burglary tools.
As a habitual offender, now with ten felony convictions, Wallace is facing up to ten years in prison. He’ll be sentenced on October 10.
