There are concerning trends when it comes to traffic-related deaths in Michigan.
The Michigan State Police Criminal Justice Information Center released annual statistics this week that break down where increases in fatal crashes were seen the most in 2024. Work zone related deaths jumped 17% and bicyclist-involved deaths are up 21%.
MSP Lieutenant Ashley Miller says there were some positive trends, though
“Our deer -involved fatalities have decreased 26%, our pedestrian fatalities have decreased 15%, and our young driver-involved fatalities, which they have categorized that as ages 16 to 20, they have also decreased 5%,” Miller said. “I know that people like to focus on how everything’s increased, but we do have things that are decreasing too.”
Miller attributes most of the crashes to distracted driving, particularly people driving while on their phones.
