Build baby build! That’s the new theme for Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan State Housing Development Authority as they look to build more housing across the state.

During a stop in Grand Rapids this week, the governor announced the state already has reached its goal of building 75,000 new homes by next year.

Four years ago, I said we would permit, build, or rehab 75 ,000 housing units in five years,” Whitmer said. “We followed up with Michigan’s first ever statewide housing plan, making Michigan a nationwide leader in addressing the housing crisis supply head on, and we were aiming to hit 75,000 by September of 2026. Today, a full year before our deadline, we’ve been able to get it done.”

Monday’s announcement was made during a ribbon cutting for the first of 16 tiny homes at Hope Village, a project developed by Mel Trotter Ministries and its workforce training subsidiary Next Step of West Michigan. The $2.8-million project in southeast Grand Rapids received a $944,000 MI Neighborhood grant from MSHDA.
