A presentation of the South Haven Speaker Series set for September 11 will focus on an issue that’s been prominent in the news this year: immigration.

Speaker Series Board member Dana Hullinger tells us they’ll welcome Professor David Thronson of the Michigan State University College of Law, an expert on family and immigration law, to discuss how shifting U.S. immigration policies and practices affect vulnerable children and families.

Hullinger tells us they booked the guest back in the spring, but the issue has only gotten more relevant.

When Professor Thrompson and I spoke about this, it was late January or early February,” Hullinger said. “I remember at the time we were saying, ‘Well, you know, it’s really confusing right now, but I’ll bet by September it’s more settled. We’ll understand better everything that’s going on and it’ll just be easier to address the topic then’ because everything was so fluid and constantly seems like it was changing in the late winter or early spring. Well, I think it’s maybe a little more settled, but there’s still al of of confusion.”

Hullinger says Thronson will help to sort out what’s been going on with immigration enforcement the past several months and differentiate between law and policy.

Thronson’s presentation, “The Impact of Immigration Law on Families,” will be on Thursday, September 11 at 7 p.m. at the Lake Michigan College South Haven Campus. The doors will open at 6 with a wine and cheese reception at 6:30. Hullinger says there will also be an opportunity for questions and answers after Thronson’s presentation.
