The school year for many public schools will begin in just over a week, but administrators are trying to plan for the year without knowing how much money they’ll have.

State lawmakers haven’t finalized an education budget, even though the new fiscal year for public schools started July 1. Redford Union Schools Superintendent Jasen Witt says this is a big problem.

Having so much funding uncertainty puts us in a really difficult position, and especially with what’s also taking place at the federal level, the state Legislature not doing their job has put us in a tough spot where we’re having to consider tough decisions that are going to definitely impact our staff and students,” Witt said.

The Redford Union District’s school board has approved a resolution calling for lawmakers to “do their job” and pass a budget.
