Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Friday announced she has signed a bipartisan package of bills, including legislation sponsored by state Rep. Pauline Wendzel, R-Watervliet, aimed at lowering costs for Michigan’s distillers and mixed spirit manufacturers.

House Bill 4403 allows those businesses to share the same space and equipment to produce their products, a move intended to reduce expenses such as rent, utilities, and equipment costs. Supporters say the change will help small businesses expand and attract more manufacturers to the state.

“This bill is a testament to what we can accomplish when we work together,” Wendzel said in a statement.

“By clarifying the law around alternating proprietorships, we’re not just supporting distillers; we’re fostering innovation and ensuring Michigan’s craft beverage industry can continue to grow and thrive.”

Whitmer said the measure eliminates “unnecessary red tape” while boosting the economy. The bill received unanimous support in both the House and Senate.
