Ravens 24, Colts 16 – Anthony Richardson injured as Colts fall to Ravens 24-16 in their preseason opener
Anthony Richardson’s preseason opener was cut short early, and the Indianapolis Colts went on to lose 24-16 to the Baltimore Ravens. Rookie LaJohntay Wester scored on an 87-yard punt return for the Ravens, and Keaton Mitchell ran for 68 yards and a touchdown. Baltimore won despite just 16 yards passing in the first half. Lamar Jackson did not play. The Indianapolis quarterback situation was always the more compelling aspect of this game. But after leading the Colts to a field goal on their opening offensive drive, Richardson left with an injured finger in the middle of their second possession after being sacked by David Ojabo.

NFL – Lions put CB Ennis Rakestraw on IR with season-ending shoulder injury
The Detroit Lions have placed cornerback Ennis Rakestraw on injured reserve with a season-ending shoulder injury and signed tight end Steven Stilianos. Detroit made the moves Thursday after coach Dan Campbell lamented that Rakestraw was hurt a year after injuries limited him to eight games as a rookie. Detroit drafted the former Missouri star in the second round last year and his season ended in mid-November after various ailments kept him off the field. Stilianos provides depth at tight end for exhibition games, limiting snaps for starter Sam LaPorta and veteran backups Brock Wright and Shane Zylstra.
NFL – Steelers will sit Aaron Rodgers, other starters in preseason opener against Jags
Aaron Rodgers won’t make his Steelers debut in Pittsburgh just yet. Coach Mike Tomlin says Rodgers and other top starters will sit out the preseason opener against Jacksonville. Tomlin believes their experience means they don’t need as much preseason action. Rodgers, who joined the Steelers in June, was open to playing but Tomlin feels it’s unnecessary for now. The first-team offense struggled early in training camp but has improved. Rookie quarterback Will Howard is out with a hand injury. The Steelers signed Logan Woodside, a backup with ties to Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, to take some of the reps while Howard recovers.

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham says she was fined by the WNBA a second time for making negative comments about the league’s referees. Cunningham, speaking earlier this week on her podcast, “Show Me Something,” said she was fined $1,500 for comments she’d made the previous week. On the debut episode of her podcast July 28, Cunningham said the refs are “just so inconsistent.” Cunningham said she found out about the second fine when Fever general manager Amber Cox pulled her aside and told her the league contacted her. Cunningham was previously fined $500 on July 18 for a TikTok video in which she made comments.
WNBA – Another WNBA game in Chicago, disrupted by a sex toy tossed onto the court
A sex toy was thrown onto the court during the Atlanta Dream’s victory at the Chicago Sky on Thursday night. This incident is the latest in a series at WNBA games. Similar events occurred in Atlanta on July 29, Chicago on Friday, and Los Angeles on Tuesday. Police reported a second toy was thrown in Atlanta, but it’s unclear if it reached the court. A man was arrested in College Park, Georgia, for throwing sex toys at two games. Another man was arrested in Phoenix for throwing a toy into the crowd. The WNBA has announced a one-year ban and prosecution for anyone throwing objects onto the court.
Golf – Akshay Bhatia shoots career-best 62 to lead in Memphis. Scheffler is 5 back
Akshay Bhatia had a great finish to get his PGA Tour postseason off to a great start. Bhatia closed eagle-birdie-birdie for 62 in the FedEx St. Jude Championship. That’s the low round of his PGA Tour career and gives him a one-shot lead over Tommy Fleetwood. Two shots back was a group that included Bud Cauley and Harry Hall. They’re both on the bubble to be among the top 50 who advance in the FedEx Cup playoffs. Scottie Scheffler shot a 67 in his first tournament since winning the British Open. It was his 10th consecutive round in the 60s.
