Twins 9, Tigers 4 – Luke Keaschall drives in three runs as Twins beat Tigers 9-4
Luke Keaschall drove in three runs for the second straight game and the Minnesota Twins beat the Detroit Tigers 9-4 on Wednesday. Keaschell is hitting .393 in his nine-game major league career, which was interrupted in April by a broken arm. He returned on Tuesday and has four hits and six RBIs in his first two games back. Thomas Hatch (1-0) picked up the win with 4 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. He was claimed off waivers on Monday from the Kansas City Royals. Jack Flaherty (6-11) took the loss, giving up six runs in 4 2/3 innings. Zach McKinstry pulled the Tigers within one with a leadoff homer in the third and Kerry Carpenter’s two-run shot put Detroit ahead 4-3 later in the inning.
Mariners 8, White Sox 6 – Rodríguez and Naylor go deep early, Mariners hold off White Sox 8-6
Julio Rodríguez hit a three-run homer during a five-run second inning for the Seattle Mariners as they beat the Chicago White Sox 8-6. Rodríguez went deep on a hanging sweeper from starter Jonathan Cannon. Cal Raleigh drove in two runs with a single immediately before Rodríguez’s homer. Seattle led 7-1 after two innings, thanks in part to Josh Naylor’s two-run homer in the first. George Kirby was effective for six innings, yielding two runs and five hits while striking out nine. Chicago made it competitive in the seventh after Kirby exited, scoring three runs off reliever Eduard Bazardo on homers from Mike Tauchman and Lenyn Sosa.
Cubs 6, Reds 1 – Seiya Suzuki and Cade Horton help the Cubs stop sweep with 6-1 win over the Reds
Seiya Suzuki homered, Cade Horton threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings and the Cubs prevented a sweep from the Reds by winning 6-1. The sixth-inning solo shot was Suzuki’s 27th home run of the season, moving him into a tie with teammate Pete Crow-Armstrong for seventh in the majors and fourth in the National League. The outfielder finished 2-for-2 on the day with a pair of RBIs and a walk, also scoring Nico Hoerner on a third-inning sacrifice fly. Horton (6-2, 3.18 ERA) earned the win after giving up only two hits and striking out six.

MLB – MLB is calling up its first female umpire, promoting Jen Pawol for Marlins-Braves
Jen Pawol is set to become the first woman to umpire in Major League Baseball when she works games this weekend between the Miami Marlins and Atlanta Braves. Pawol will work the bases in Saturday’s doubleheader at Truist Park and the plate on Sunday, MLB told The Associated Press. Pawol, a 48-year-old from New Jersey, worked spring training games in 2024 and this year. MLB’s move comes 28 years after the gender barrier for game officials was broken in the NBA, 10 years after the NFL hired its first full-time female official and three years after the men’s soccer World Cup employed a female referee. The NHL still has not had any women as on-ice officials.

NFL – NFL players can still use smelling salts as long as not provided by teams
NFL players can continue using smelling salts during games. The NFL Players Association clarified this on Wednesday after the league’s memo on Tuesday. The memo only bans team employees from distributing smelling salts or ammonia inhalants during pregame activities, games and halftime. The NFLPA stated they weren’t informed of this policy change beforehand. The league’s memo prohibits club personnel from supplying these products, citing an FDA warning from 2024. The FDA noted there’s no evidence of the safety or efficacy of these products and they could mask concussion symptoms. Smelling salts have been a staple on NFL sidelines for years.

NCAAFB – Ohio State’s QB competition b remains too close to call
Ohio State’s quarterback competition between Julian Sayin and Lincoln Kienholz remains close after the first week of preseason practices. Sayin originally committed to Alabama but transferred to Ohio State. Kienholz had a strong offseason and was named an Iron Buckeye. Quarterbacks coach Billy Fessler emphasized the importance of consistency, especially in situational scenarios like third downs and the red zone.

O’Ward says a lot of people were caught off guard. Indiana is home to Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and is where the IndyCar Series is based. IndyCar says it was unaware of the planned use of the imagery and says it preferred it not being used.
