Red Arrow Highway work starts in Berrien County Monday

The Berrien County Road Department is reminding everyone the reconstruction of Red Arrow Highway between the Bridgman city limits and about 1,000 feet south of the Cook nuclear power plant will start Monday.

The project will result in lane closures through November, although the department stresses the road will always remain open and there will be no hard closures.

Drivers are advised to give themselves a little extra time when going through the construction area. However, they should also get used to only having one lane of travel in each direction because the road department is going to reduce the number of lanes on that stretch of road as part of this project. That has caused some public outcry, but the department says fewer lanes means fewer crashes.

Next year, the road department is planning to rebuild the road from south of the Cook plant to Stevensville and add a trail along the side.
