Tigers 7, D’Backs 2 – Tigers beat Diamondbacks 7-2, winning 4th straight after a 1-12 slump
Kerry Carpenter hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs, Chris Paddack threw six solid innings in his Detroit debut and the Tigers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-2. The AL Central-leading Tigers have won four straight games, coming off a 1-12 slump. Detroit may make moves before the trade deadline on Thursday to bolster its chances of winning the franchise’s first World Series since 1984. Arizona has lost five straight, matching its longest losing streak of the season.

White Sox 9, Phillies 3 – Vargas and Quero each hit a 3-run homer as the White Sox knock off the Phillies 9-3
Miguel Vargas and Edgar Quero each hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Philadelphia Phillies 9-3. Colson Montgomery and Kyle Teel also went deep as last-place Chicago won the rain-delayed rubber game of the three-game series. Luis Robert Jr. and Mike Tauchman each had three hits, and Mike Vasil pitched four scoreless innings. Philadelphia’s bullpen struggled on the same day it acquired hard-throwing reliever Jhoan Duran in a trade with Minnesota. The Phillies remained a half-game back of the NL East-leading Mets, who lost 5-0 at San Diego.

Cubs 10, Brewers 3 – Busch’s leadoff homer, Ballesteros’ 3-run double help Cubs beat Brewers 10-3 to avoid sweep
Michael Busch homered on the game’s first pitch, Moisés Ballesteros hit a bases-clearing double and the Chicago Cubs trounced the Milwaukee Brewers 10-3 on Wednesday to avoid a three-game sweep. Milwaukee leads Chicago by one game in the NL Central. The teams meet once more this season, a five-game series at Chicago from Aug. 18-21. Ian Happ homered, Pete Crow-Armstrong went 3 for 4 with two doubles and Kyle Tucker was 2 for 3 with two RBIs for the Cubs. Milwaukee’s William Contreras had his fifth career two-homer game.

MLB – Suárez to Mariners, Durán to Phillies as MLB trade deadline heats
Slugger Eugenio Suarez is headed to the Seattle Mariners and flame-throwing reliever Jhoan Duran has been traded to the Philadelphia Phillies during a busy Wednesday ahead of Major League Baseball’s trade deadline on Thursday. Suarez hit 36 homers for the D-backs this season while Duran is one of MLB’s elite relievers. In other deals, the New York Yankees acquired veteran outfielder Austin Slater while the New York Mets added relievers Ryan Helsley and Tyler Rogers. There are several prominent players available before the deadline, including Cleveland outfielder Steven Kwan and Pittsburgh right-hander Mitch Keller.

MLB – Cubs add depth to rotation by acquiring Michael Soroka from Nationals
The Chicago Cubs have acquired right-hander Michael Soroka from the Washington Nationals. The deal Wednesday night gives the Cubs a veteran starter as they pursue an NL East title. Washington received two minor leaguers: infielder Ronny Cruz and outfielder Christian Franklin. An All-Star in 2019 with Atlanta, the 27-year-old Soroka is 3-8 with a 4.87 ERA this season for the Nationals. Washington signed him for one year and $9 million in the offseason. He should provide depth in the Cubs’ rotation behind Matthew Boyd and Shota Imanaga.

MLB – Yankees bolster outfield, acquire veteran Austin Slater from the White Sox
Austin Slater is heading to the New York Yankees, giving them another right-handed bat they can plug into a part-time role down the stretch. The active Yankees have acquired the veteran outfielder from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for minor league pitching prospect Gage Ziehl. New York had a pressing need to bolster its outfield depth with star slugger Aaron Judge sidelined by a flexor strain in his right elbow. The 32-year-old Slater hit .236 with five home runs and 11 RBIs in 51 games with the White Sox this season. The Yankees will be his fifth team in just over a year.

Los Angeles Chargers vs. Detroit Lions, 8:00 p.m.

NFL – Lions and Chargers have high expectations as they open the NFL preseason
The Detroit Lions fell way short last season, going one-and-done in the playoffs after having the best regular season in franchise history. They still have a loaded roster stacked with talent and plenty of unfinished business. The Lions kick off their quest for their first Super Bowl title when they take on the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday night in the Hall of Fame game, which opens the NFL’s preseason. The Chargers are also coming off a season that ended with a loss in their playoff opener, a wild-card game against Houston. But it was a different vibe in Los Angeles where Jim Harbaugh came in and led a six-win improvement.

NFL – Better practices show Caleb Williams has gained confidence in Bears new offense
Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams has a higher level of confidence now within the offense of new coach Ben Johnson after a full week of practices and it’s starting to show in fewer turnovers. Williams is hitting his rookie targets in addition to the veterans. Johnson tried to give Williams as much of the offense as he could and realized it would be a process considering the struggles he had last year as a rookie with a 5-12 team. The Bears offensive line has been rebuilt and has also had its problems in camp.

NCAA – Coaches try to master retention amid NIL, revenue sharing and transfer portal
College coaches are racing to master retention as revenue sharing and NIL opportunities steer athletes toward the transfer portal. Arkansas coach Sam Pittman, who lost most of his 2023 recruits, says the transfer rate isn’t about treatment or development but possibly playing time or finances. At SEC Media Days, he emphasized loyalty, with players like Cam Ball staying committed. Florida coach Billy Napier highlights the importance of pitching the right message during recruiting. Coaches like SMU’s Rhett Lashlee and NC State’s Dave Doeren stress rewarding loyalty over enticing new players with higher offers.
