There’s a new effort to stop book bans.

The Michigan Library Association has started a petition for lawmakers, urging them to reject censorship efforts and to increase support for libraries in the budget. Interim Director Dillon Geshel said many ban efforts are underway now.

In the Lowell Area Schools, they have a librarian there that’s been enduring a five-year smear campaign by an individual who has called her terrible things, like a pedophile or a smut peddler, while the librarian is simply trying to do her job to develop a well-rounded collection for the students there,” Geshel said.

That Lowell librarian filed a civil lawsuit against the women accused of saying those things. Also this year, in the Hartland and Lapeer school districts, some library board members have tried to get rid of material they deem inappropriate for children.
