Camping fees about to go up in Michigan

It’s going to cost you more to go camping at state parks in Michigan.

Those camping rates go up on Friday. Campers will pay $4 to $10 more a night for modern and semi-modern campsites. Modern lodges will undergo a phased-in rate increase over the next two years, with a nightly base rate of $236 a night by 2027.

Jason Fleming with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources told us how the money will be used.

“Keeping pace with inflation, equipment, utility costs, those rise as well,” Fleming said. “A lot of the programs that we do that are tied into the Parks and Recreation Division. So it could be things such as ensuring that we have enough STW, or I should say short-term workers, staff out there.”

Fleming says camping is up 2.3% through June, but has not hit the highest rate of occupancy they had right after the pandemic.
