This weekend will bring the return of Chalk the Block to downtown St. Joseph.
St. Joseph Today’s Daniele Crevier tells us they’re welcoming more than 40 artists from all over to draw art on the streets of the downtown.
“We’ve got 48 blocks, so you’ll get to see in the Broad Street zone, which is between State Street and Lake Boulevard, and then our Chalk the Block zone over at the Pleasant Street Plaza, you’ll see between those two spaces, you’ll see 48 blocks that are chalked, and then you’ll see eight vertical panels.”
Crevier says those vertical panels are an idea that was tried in 2017 and 2018, and they were quite impressive.
“We’re going to have four standalone panels outside of the St. Joe Welcome Center on the Pleasant Street side. And then four of the verticals are going to be arranged into a cube formation. So they’re just basically these vertical panels that are eight by eight feet and the artists are going to paint them. So there’s a couple of fun opportunities for photo ops.”
Crevier says it’s always amazing to see the chalk pieces the visiting artists are able to create on the streets. Some of the art will be 3D, and Crevier remembers some stand out pieces from last year, one of a carousel horse, and one of a cup of ice cream. The public can vote on their favorite chalk art pieces and the winning artists can win cash prizes.
Chalk the Block runs August 1 through August 3 and everyone’s invited. This is the 25th year for Chalk the Block.
