A Bloomingdale man is facing charges after the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department says he attached two of its deputies Monday.
The department says the deputies were called out to a home in the 3000 block of 37 1/2 Street in Bloomingdale Township around 10:30 p.m. to conduct a welfare check. A family member had called with concerns about the resident’s well-being.
When deputies entered the home, they say they announced their presence, and then 41-year-old Derrick Mehrle ran out of a bedroom at the two deputies, striking both with a metal object before falling to the ground.
Police say a taser was used to get Mehrle under control, and after a short fight, he was handcuffed.
The two deputies received medical treatment for injuries sustained in the incident. Mehrle was lodged at the Van Buren County Jail on charges of assault with intent to maim, two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, two counts of resisting and obstructing police and causing injury, and one count of assaulting, resisting, or obstructing a paramedic.
The investigation is ongoing.
