Tigers 2, Rangers 1 – Skubal twirls gem and Vierling lifts Tigers over Rangers 2-1 to stop 6-game slide
Matt Vierling hit a tiebreaking single with two outs in the eighth inning and the Detroit Tigers snapped a season-worst six-game losing streak by beating the Texas Rangers 2-1. Vierling’s base hit up the middle off Chris Martin scored Gleyber Torres after the Rangers finally got something going against Tigers ace Tarik Skubal in the seventh. Skubal left with runners at the corners and two outs, and Adolis García scored on a wild pitch by Tyler Holton. Skubal struck out 11 and walked none on 105 pitches in his seventh double-digit strikeout game this season. Will Vest got four outs for his 16th save.

White Sox 7, Pirates 2 – Vargas and Tauchman lead White Sox over Pirates 7-2 for 1st series sweep of season
Miguel Vargas and Mike Tauchman hit back-to-back homers in a four-run first inning, and the Chicago White Sox cruised to a 7-2 victory over the struggling Pittsburgh Pirates for their first series sweep this season. Vargas hit a three-run shot to open the scoring against Andrew Heaney, his 11th homer of the year but first since June 15. Tauchman followed by launching a drive that carried over the right-field stands and bounced into the Allegheny River. The White Sox became the last major league team to sweep a series this season as they sent the Pirates to their 11th loss in 12 games.

Red Sox 6, Cubs 1 – Wilyer Abreu homers twice as the Red Sox beat the Cubs 6-1 to avoid a sweep
Wilyer Abreu homered twice and drove in three runs, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Chicago Cubs 6-1 to avoid a series sweep. Alex Bregman also connected for Boston, and Garrett Crochet pitched six effective innings in his fourth consecutive win. The Red Sox went ahead to stay when Trevor Story opened the seventh with a walk and Abreu hit a drive to right-center off Ryan Pressly for his 19th homer. Boston improved to 12-3 in July. It had won 10 in a row going into the series. Chicago wasted a sharp performance by Cade Horton, who pitched 5 2/3 innings of two-hit ball. The Cubs had won five of six.

MLB – Majors-best Tigers end 6-game skid with All-Star Tarik Skubal’s strong start
Tarik Skubal delivers a stellar performance as the Detroit Tigers beat the Texas Rangers 2-1 on Sunday night. The win ends Detroit’s six-game losing streak, the longest active skid in the majors. Skubal pitched into the seventh inning with 11 strikeouts and no walks. Despite his effort, he didn’t get the win after a wild pitch tied the game. Matt Vierling’s tiebreaking single in the eighth secured the victory. Skubal remains one of baseball’s top pitchers this season with a 2.19 ERA.

Golf – Scheffler dominates in British Open victory for his 2nd major title this year
Scottie Scheffler is the champion golfer of the year and one step closer to the career Grand Slam. The world’s No. 1 player dominated the British Open on Sunday at Royal Portrush. He led by as many as seven shots and shot a 68 to win by four shots. Scheffler won his second major of the year after the PGA Championship. Now he goes to the U.S. Open next year with a chance to complete the Grand Slam. Harris English was runner-up. Rory McIlroy started slowly and never had a chance before an adoring gallery in his native Northern Ireland.

Golf – McIlroy falls short in bid to crown British Open homecoming with the claret jug
Rory McIlroy’s legion of fans came in hope more than expectation to the final day of the British Open at Royal Portrush. He needed a minor miracle to catch Scottie Scheffler and it wasn’t to be. McIlroy shot 2-under 69 to finish in a tie for seventh place and seven strokes behind the world No. 1. It didn’t stop the locals from celebrating their favorite son in his homecoming after winning the Masters in April to complete the career Grand Slam. McIlroy says “I’ve gotten everything I wanted out of this week apart from a claret jug."

Napheesa Collier sets a scoring record in the WNBA All-Star Game, leading her team to victory over Team Clark. The game, filled with 4-point shots and minimal defense, broke the previous scoring record for an All-Star Game. This year’s event also highlighted ongoing collective bargaining agreement negotiations, with players wearing shirts demanding fair pay. Caitlin Clark, sidelined by injury, served as an ambassador for the weekend. The game featured unique rules like a 20-second shot clock and live substitutions. Rookies Paige Bueckers, Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen made history as the largest rookie group since 2011. Celebrities and WNBA legends attended.

WNBA – WNBA All-Stars make statement with warmup shirts over CBA
Players wore shirts reading “Pay us what you owe us” during warmups for the All-Star game. The message follows failed negotiations on a collective bargaining agreement with the league. Players are seeking higher salaries, improved benefits and revenue sharing. Some players, including All-Stars Napheesa Collier and Angel Reese, have hinted at a potential walkout if no agreement is reached by October.  Fans after the game were chanting “Pay them.”

NFL – NFL teams open training camp, starting the long journey to SB 60 in San Francisco
The Los Angeles Chargers and Detroit Lions already have kicked off training camp. Rookies for several other teams have also reported. All veterans across the league are due this week. The NFL season is underway. The road to San Francisco for Super Bowl 60 begins in the grueling summer heat. Some teams have new coaches. A couple of old coaches have new teams. Star players have switched uniforms. There are position battles to determine. And, plenty of storylines to watch. Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley and the Philadelphia Eagles aim for a repeat. Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs look to rebound after being denied the first three-peat in Super Bowl history.

NFL – Lions DL Levi Onwuzurike out for season after ACL surgery
Detroit Lions defensive lineman Levi Onwuzurike is out for the season after having knee surgery, a setback for a franchise that was counting on him to fill in for Alim McNeill. Lions coach Dan Campbell made the announcement on Sunday morning, just before his team had the NFL’s first training camp practice of the year. Onwuzurike started 11 games last season, including Detroit’s loss to Washington in the divisional round. His playing time increased when McNeill had a season-ending knee injury in December. McNeill is out indefinitely. Rookie defensive tackle Tyleik Williams has a chance to play a significant role.

NFL – Trump threatens new stadium deal if Commanders don’t switch back to Redskins
President Donald Trump is threatening to hold up a stadium deal for Washington’s football team if it doesn’t restore its old name. Trump said Sunday on his social media site that the Washington Commanders should revert to the Redskins and the Cleveland Guardians should return to the Indians. Later in the day, he threatened the NFL team’s stadium deal. The Commanders and Guardians changed their names in 2022 after years of debate over logos and names considered offensive. Both teams have stated they have no plans to change them back.

MILB –John Oliver’s Erie Moon Mammoths debut in front of a record crowd
John Oliver brought his quirky humor to minor league baseball with the debut of the Erie Moon Mammoths. The team, rebranded by Oliver’s “Last Week Tonight,” played its first game on Saturday night in front of a record crowd of 7,070. The idea began in May when Oliver invited teams to pitch why they deserved a rebrand. The Erie SeaWolves won and after weeks of planning, the Moon Mammoths, complete with a space-themed woolly mammoth mascot, were unveiled. Fans have embraced the eccentric team, with record merchandise sales and packed games. Oliver even threw the first pitch and joined the fun as a batboy.  Erie is the Double-A Eastern League affiliate of the Detroit Tigers.
