There’s some new housing in the works in Watervliet.
The Berrien County Brownfield Authority met on Thursday and on the agenda was a request for a new brownfield plan to be established for parcels at the southern end of River Oaks Drive in Watervliet to make way for 19 single family homes. Berrien County Community Development Director Dan Fette tells us Allen Edwin Homes out of Portage is looking to develop the four-bedroom homes, continuing a housing development that started back in 2004.
A recent change to state law makes it possible for brownfield dollars to be captured to help support housing developments, and this is a result of that.
ette said the county authority recommended the brownfield plan be created for this Watervliet development, and now the matter will go to the city of Watervliet. After that, it would go the Berrien County Board of Commissioners.
Fette called Thursday’s action the first of many steps to make the project happen.
