Nessel calls for ICE to stop wearing masks, plain clothes

There’s been a call from Michigan’s Attorney General for better transparency from immigration agents.

Dana Nessel is one of 21 attorneys general calling on Congress to enact a law that would prohibit ICE agents from being masked and wearing plain clothes while conducting immigration raids, something that’s been seen in Detroit over the past week. Nessel says the practices set a dangerous precedent.

It’s as dismaying as it is shocking that these standards need to be addressed, let alone enshrined into our laws,” Nessel said. “Congress has the ability, and I would argue the moral responsibility, to pass legislation that protects public safety and upholds transparency and accountability.”

The letter from the Attorney General also raises the worry that the lack of identification is enabling bad actors to impersonate ICE agents in order to exploit or harm members of the immigrant community.
