There’s an effort by a state representative to bring back training for cursive writing in Michigan schools.
Most kids don’t learn cursive in school now because they use computers, but state Representative Brenda Carter has reintroduced her bill to give school districts the option to have that handwriting instruction.
“I would say that making this an option for schools, not a mandate, gives our school districts the opportunity to choose whether or not this is value-added at the current time,” Carter said. “They may have prioritized different other things, but making it an option gives that school district a choice.”
Carter says it’s important for kids to learn cursive because they should know how to sign their name so it can be used when they go to vote. She says they should also be able to read cursive because many documents are written in it.
