Midwest Energy and Communications has launched a new electrical safety campaign, and it’s enlisted the aid of some fourth grade students to help.

The company that provides electric service and broadband internet around southern Michigan says it’s put artwork from the students up on billboards to promote its safety message.

The billboard from Kynzlee D. of Sam Adams Elementary in Cassopolis warns fellow kids not to climb trees near power lines, while the billboard from Evelyn S. of Ruth McGregor Elementary in Sand Creek reminds people to stay at least 50 feet away from a fallen power line.

MEC says it’s held demonstrations that have reached students in Addison, Cassopolis, Dowagiac, Edwardsburg, Madison, Marcellus, Mattawan, Niles, and Sand Creek in the last year. As part of each, students are asked to create a poster illustrating something they learned. A winning poster is selected from each school district, and the winners get a pizza party for their classroom while their teachers receive a gift card for classroom supplies.

Two overall winners, one from southwest Michigan and one from southeast Michigan, get their posters displayed on a billboard in their region.
