Travelers across the country are reporting a surprising shift at airport security: keeping their shoes on.
For the first time since 2006, the TSA has begun quietly phasing out the long-standing requirement to remove footwear at screening checkpoints. Though the agency hasn’t officially announced the change, a former TSA officer and travel reporter says internal memos show the new policy is rolling out at airports across America.
Frequent flier, and Michigan resident, Darren Dismiter is pleased.
“I think it’s about time,” Dismiter said. “I think it’s been 20 years since the last issue they had, so it’s a good thing.”
The change is being described as a major upgrade in both passenger comfort and screening speed, thanks to new technology that can detect threats without shoe removal.
