There will be lots of people swimming along Belle Isle Beach in Detroit on Friday to raise money for a good cause. They will be swimming a quarter mile, a half mile, a mile or two to raise money for cancer research as part of Swim Across America Motor City Mile.

Swim coordinator Patrick Weiss, a cancer survivor, says money will go to the Michigan Rogel Cancer Center.

There are a lot of sort of cutting edge ideas that researchers have, but there’s not enough funding to fund all of them,” Weiss said. “So what Swim Across America does is we have a peer review board that will review all of the proposals from the researchers at the Roegel Cancer Center, and then we try to fund one or two projects a year that look very promising.”

One in two men, and one in three women, will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. You can donate at SwimAcrossAmerica.org.
