It was a deadly holiday weekend in Michigan, with police reporting eight drownings across the state since the Fourth of July.
Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard is warning everyone to always consider safety when heading out on the water, including wearing life jackets and avoiding alcohol.
“We see people that have been drinking, they get in the water, don’t realize the physiological impact that alcohol has combined with the sun and the dehydration, and they don’t have the same capability even if they are a fairly good swimmer,” Bouchard said.
Two people drowned in Oakland County — a 49-year-old man on White Lake and an 86-year-old man in a Springfield Township pond. Meanwhile, a Taylor man drowned in a Mecosta County Lake and a father and son drowned in Cheboygan County.
There were also two drownings in Saginaw County and one in Muskegon County.
