Tigers 5, Rays 1 – Keider Montero keeps Tigers pitching dominance going in 5-1 win over Rays
Keider Montero and three relievers combined on a five-hitter and the Detroit Tigers beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-1. The Tigers (58-34) have won four straight games while only allowing four runs, improving to 24 games over .500 for the first time since 2013. Montero (4-1) allowed one run and four hits and a walk in six innings while striking out four. After losing his first start, Montero is 4-0 with a 3.31 ERA in 11 outings as a starter and bulk reliever. Tyler Holton, Brenan Hanifee and Will Vest each pitched a scoreless inning to complete the win. hane Baz (8-4) gave up three runs and seven hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in six innings for the Rays.

Blue Jays 8, White Sox 4 – Loperfido homers as the Blue Jays beat the White Sox 8-4 for their 9th consecutive win
Joey Loperfido homered and drove in three runs, and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Chicago White Sox 8-4 for their ninth consecutive win. Addison Barger and Nathan Lukes also connected as AL East-leading Toronto improved to 27-10 in its last 37 games. Bo Bichette had two hits and All-Star slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. walked three times. At 53-38, the Blue Jays matched the franchise record for most victories before the All-Star break. Mike Tauchman had three hits and two RBIs for the last-place White Sox, who won two of three at Toronto last month.

MLB – Colson Montgomery makes his home debut with the Chicago White Sox
Colson Montgomery traveled a bumpy road from top prospect to the major leagues. The young shortstop was joined on the journey by the Chicago White Sox. That made his home debut in Chicago even sweeter for the player and the team. Montgomery went 0 for 3 with a walk and scored a run in an 8-4 loss to Toronto. He played in his first major league game on Friday night at Colorado and went 5 for 10 while helping the White Sox take two of three against the Rockies. Montgomery says the team’s faith in him played a big role in his turnaround after a rough stretch.

WNBA – Wings move another potential Clark-Bueckers matchup to Mavericks home
The Dallas Wings will try again showcasing a Caitlin Clark-Paige Bueckers matchup at the home of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks. The Wings say the club is moving the Aug. 1 game against Clark and the Indiana Fever to American Airlines Center. What was supposed to be the first matchup of the past two No. 1 picks in the WNBA draft was held at the AAC on June 27. Clark missed the Fever’s 94-86 victory with a groin injury. The game still drew 20,409 fans.

Tennis – Djokovic, Shelton, Sinner, Swiatek and Mirra Andreeva reach the quarterfinals
Novak Djokovic has overcame an uncharacteristically unsteady start to avoid what would have been his earliest exit at Wimbledon since 2016. Djokovic took the last five games and 14 of the final 15 points to come through for a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory over 11th-seeded Alex de Minaur in the fourth round Monday. Djokovic’s bid for an eighth Wimbledon title and 25th Grand Slam trophy will continue against No. 22 Flavio Cobolli. No. 1 Jannik Sinner, No. 10 Ben Shelton, 18-year-old Mirra Andreev, Iga Swiatek and Belinda Bencic also won their fourth-round matches on Monday, when Roger Federer sat in the Royal Box at Centre Court.

NBA – Pacers confirms Haliburton won’t play next year as he recovers from torn Achilles
The Indiana Pacers won’t be rushing guard Tyrese Haliburton back to the court next season as he recovers from a torn right Achilles tendon. Pacers president of basketball operations Kevin Pritchard said Monday in a news conference that Haliburton "will not play next year." Haliburton suffered his Achilles injury early in Game 7 of the NBA Finals. He had surgery June 23 at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. It was a historic postseason for Haliburton, who turned in an array of buzzer-beating winners, incredible plays and some unprecedented stat lines. The Oklahoma City Thunder were crowned champions after beating the Pacers 103-91.

NBA – Lonzo Ball excited for fresh start with Cavaliers after trade from Bulls
Lonzo Ball was at the Cleveland Cavaliers’ practice complex meeting with the medical staff and coaches on Monday after his trade from the Chicago Bulls for forward Isaac Okoro was finalized on Sunday. Chicago and Cleveland agreed to the trade on June 28, but it didn’t become official until the start of the new league year. Ball said he thinks the Cavaliers suit his playing style and that he is excited to play with guard Donovan Mitchell. Ball averaged 7.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.3 assists in 35 games this past season after missing the 2022-23 and 2023-24 campaigns because of a left knee injury.

NBA – New York Knicks hire Mike Brown, a two-time NBA Coach of the Year
The New York Knicks have hired Mike Brown, turning to the two-time NBA Coach of the Year after firing Tom Thibodeau. The Knicks offered the job to Brown last week and announced Monday that he would be taking over the team that reached the Eastern Conference finals last season for the first time in 25 years. They decided to fire Thibodeau despite that and eventually picked Brown, who wasn’t out of work long after getting fired by the Sacramento Kings during last season. Brown had led the Kings to the postseason in 2023 and was voted the Coach of the Year.

NBA – Paolo Banchero agrees on a 5-year extension. Total value could reach $287 million
Paolo Banchero has agreed to the richest contract in Orlando Magic history. According to a person with knowledge of the agreement, his five-year extension is worth $239 million and could reach about $287 million should he become eligible for a supermax deal. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the terms were not revealed by Banchero or the Magic. Banchero was the rookie of the year in 2022-23 and an All-Star the following season. He has led the Magic to two straight playoff appearances.

NHL – Back-to-back Stanley Cup champion Tyler Johnson announces his retirement
Tyler Johnson has announced his retirement after playing 13 NHL seasons and winning the Stanley Cup twice with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Johnson called it a career in a lengthy message posted on social media Monday. Johnson had battled injuries in the final years of his career and is set to turn 35 on July 29. The Spokane, Washington, native skated in 863 regular-season and playoff games since debuting in the league in 2013. Johnson was part of the Lightning’s core when they reached the final in 2015 and won the Cup back to back in 2020 and ’21. He finished his playing days with Chicago and Boston.

NASCAR – NASCAR’s first in-season tournament adds some drama to Chicago
NASCAR’s first in-season tournament hasn’t made much of an impression on its drivers so far. Ty Gibbs said Sunday he didn’t know who his second-round opponent was until after the Cup Series race. That might be about to change. Gibbs is one of eight drivers still in the mix for the $1 million prize that goes to the winner of the five-race, bracket-style competition. While Shane van Gisbergen was closing out his Cup victory in Chicago this weekend, some of the most compelling action on the downtown street course was connected to the inaugural In-Season Challenge.
