The Bicentennial Bridge connecting St. Joseph and Benton Harbor will likely remain closed to vehicle traffic through at least Thursday.
The Michigan Department of Transportation encountered a problem properly closing the bridge last Thursday and had to leave it in the open position all Independence Day weekend. An out-of-state specialist was brought in to inspect the bridge on Tuesday, and MDOT’s Nick Schirripa tells us the agency’s staff and the expert are still trying to determine the cause of the malfunction.
While the bridge remains unavailable, drivers are reminded they can use the Blossomland Bridge exit to Whitwam Drive to get from St. Joseph to Benton Harbor. Drivers headed to St. Joseph from Benton Harbor will have to use the Napier Avenue bridge, or they can use Whitwam Drive to reach M-63.
We’ll let you know as soon as we learn more information about the status of the bridge.
