The Bicentennial Bridge connecting Benton Harbor and St. Joseph will remain in its open position at least through Tuesday.
The Michigan Department of Transportation announced last Thursday the bridge couldn’t be closed due to a mechanical problem. It remained up all Independence Day weekend, creating a slight inconvenience for those heading to Benton Harbor after the St. Joseph fireworks show.
MDOT spokesperson Nick Schirripa now tells us the agency won’t have any additional information until sometime Tuesday as it waits for an out-of-state expert to arrive and inspect the bridge.
Drivers are reminded they can use the Blossomland Bridge exit to Whitwam Drive to get from St. Joseph to Benton Harbor. Drivers headed to St. Joseph from Benton Harbor will have to use the Napier Avenue bridge, or they can use Whitwam Drive to reach M-63.
