The Michigan Secretary of State’s office has released a new report on county-level voter turnout from the state’s presidential election last year.
The Secretary of State says 2024 brought the first presidential election the state’s held since voters passed new accessible voting options under Proposal 2 in 2022.
In 2024, Michigan broke its 2020 turnout record with more than 5.7 million votes cast. The state was ranked third in the nation with 74.6% of eligible voters casting a ballot — one of only five states with higher voter turnout than in 2020. Voters cast more than 60% of ballots early or by mail.
Looking at Southwest Michigan, Berrien County had a voter turnout of 75.2%, placing it 68th out of Michigan’s 83 counties. 38.5% voted absentee, 18.9% voted early and in-person, and 42.5% voted in-person on Election Day.
Van Buren County’s turnout was a little better than Berrien’s, with 75.4% voting, ranking the county 65th out of 83. Election Day voting was also the most popular in Van Buren with 47.8% voting that way, 36.4% voting absentee, and 15.9% voting early.
Cass County’s turnout was the worst in Southwest Michigan at 74.0%, placing the county 76th out of 83. Again, Election Day voting was most popular, followed by absentee and then early voting in-person.
