Coming up on July 15 will be a forum with candidates for the South Haven City Council.

Organized by the American Association of University Women’s South Haven chapter, the event will feature the candidates for mayor and city council in Wards 1, 2, and 3 in the August primary. AAUW South Haven President Judy Pollack tells us the group holds these forums each election because it’s important for voters to know who’s seeking to run their community.

They’ll know what they’re thinking and what their plans are and their ability to do it, their experience, that kind of thing,” Pollack said. “So that’s what people want to know.”

Pollack says local politics may not be as headline-grabbing as national politics, but people are just as passionate about the issues. And the people making the decisions are our neighbors.

For example, most residents are in favor of something like lifeguards at the beach. But, you know, the problem is, how do you do that? What would be the protocol? How would that happen?”

Pollack says each candidate will be asked the same questions, which are all being drafted by the forum committee, and the AAUW intends to keep everything civil.

The event will be July 15 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lake Michigan College South Haven campus, and everyone’s invited. There will also be a Facebook Live stream of the forum at the AAUW’s Facebook group.
