The Bicentennial Bridge between St. Joseph and Benton Harbor will be closed all weekend due to mechanical problems, likely creating a traffic headache with tonight’s fireworks in St. Joseph. However, St. Joseph Department of Public Safety Director Steve Neubecker tells us they have made adjustments to the traffic plan.

“What we’re going to do is we normally close the M-63 Whitwam Drive entrance ramp,” Neubecker said. “We’re going to open that this year to allow individuals to go that way through the city of Benton Harbor to get around the bridge closure.”

Neubecker says that’s an alternate route into Benton Harbor that ought to help.

Just continue northbound on M-63 and use the Whitwam entrance ramp to get you through the city of Benton Harbor.”

Otherwise, Neubecker advises those attending the fireworks to arrive early and spend some time visiting downtown businesses before the big show.

The Michigan Department of Transportation says the Bicentennial Bridge will be closed through at least Tuesday.
