The embattled director of the Michigan State Police, Colonel James Grady, testified before members of a House Committee this week with his future in doubt following word of recent rank-and-file surveys showing a “lack of confidence” in his leadership.

In one exchange, Republican state Representative Mike Mueller of Linden asked Grady about morale issues within MSP.

When we read the surveys, the dialogue, one of the main criticisms are the troops and the people working below you feel that there’s a lack of communication,” Mueller said.

“I’m doing the work, Representative Mueller,” Grady said. “I’m doing everything that I can to ensure that the morale increases because when they’re in a good place, they can come and do the work effectively and efficiently every day. And that’s something that I support as the leader of this department.”

Members of the House Committee on Oversight say they are also investigating Grady over allegations of misconduct that includes alleged favoritism in staff promotions and salary bonuses.
