Siena Heights University has announced it will close at the end of the next academic year.

The university located in Adrian opened its doors more than 100 years ago as the St. Joseph College for Women. In 1939, it was renamed Siena Heights College.

President Douglas Palmer announced the closure.

The reality is, colleges and universities across America have been impacted by shifts in demographics, declining enrollment, and rising costs,” Palmer said. “It is just not possible to continue beyond this next year. We’re not the first college and university to close, nor will we be the last.”

The upcoming school year is expected to be complete, with athletics, events, graduation, and more.

The school said it is working with current students to facilitate transfers and will help faculty and staff transition.
