Veterinarian: watch out for your pets during Fourth of July week

We may love fireworks on the Fourth of July, but it’s a different story for our pets.

Michigan Humane Vice President of Veterinary Medicine Crystal Sapp was asked why cats and dogs hate fireworks so much.

“In part, it’s not something that is normal to them,” Sapp said. “It only happens at certain times of the year. It feels unpredictable to them. It’s not part of the normal routine. So anything outside of that normal routine can throw off our animals.”

Dr. Sapp says all dogs should have a collar and a microchip in case they run away during the fireworks, and all backyard gates should be closed.

Other tips to help your pets include turn on the radio or TV nice and loud. Make sure plenty of water is on hand and a few extra treats wouldn’t hurt.
