Tigers 3, Twins 0 – Skubal strikes out 13, wins 10th straight decision as Tigers beat Twins 3-0
Tarik Skubal struck out 13 hitters in seven innings and the Detroit Tigers beat the Minnesota Twins 3-0. Skubal (10-2) only allowed one hit — a clean single to right by Ty France in the fifth inning — as he improved to 10-0 with a 1.74 ERA in his last 15 starts. The last double-digit streak in one season by a Detroit lefty was Earl Whitehill’s 11-start stretch in 1930. The strikeouts matched Skubal’s career high, last done on May 25 in his 94-pitch shutout against the Guardians. The Tigers took a 1-0 lead on Kerry Carpenter’s solo homer in the first inning, and he added a RBI triple in the fifth before leaving the game with an apparent leg injury. Riley Greene hit a solo homer in the fourth. Will Vest pitched the ninth to pick up his 13th save. Chris Paddack (3-7) gave up three runs in 4 2/3 innings for the Twins.
White Sox 5, Giants 2 – White Sox rally for 4 runs in seventh to beat Giants 5-2 and keep Verlander winless
Kyle Teel hit a go-ahead, two-run double with the bases loaded in the seventh and the Chicago White Sox beat the San Francisco Giants 5-2 on Sunday to keep Justin Verlander winless in 13 starts. Jonathan Cannon and five relievers combined to strike out 11. Tyler Gilbert (2-1) struck out two in an inning for the win. Mike Vasil pitched around a walk in the ninth for his second save. Verlander allowed a run, five hits and two walks, striking out three in six innings in sometimes rainy conditions. The three-time Cy Young Award winner’s 13-game winless streak is the longest by a Giants starter since at least 1901. Before signing with San Francisco in January, Verlander’s previous longest winless streak was seven starts.
Astros 2, Cubs 0 – Jose Altuve homers and Framber Valdez tosses six shutout innings in Astros’ 2-0 win over Cubs
Jose Altuve hit a two-run homer and Framber Valdez tossed six shutout innings, and the Houston Astros beat the Chicago Cubs 2-0. Altuve’s 13th home run of the season broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning. It was his first extra base hit in 34 at bats and the Astros’ only extra base hit of the game. Valdez (9-4) struck out six while allowing five hits and two walks. Only one man reached third base against him. He exited with two on and nobody out in the seventh, but Bryan Abreu replaced him and retired Michael Busch, Vidal Bruján and Ian Happ to work out of trouble.

Angel Reese scored a season-high 24 points and became the first WNBA player with 15 or more rebounds in four straight games, finishing with 16 boards and leading the Chicago Sky to a 92-85 victory on Sunday over the Los Angeles Sparks. Reese had 11 points in the fourth quarter, giving the Sky an 85-74 lead on a three-point play with 2 1/2 minutes to go. She had 19, 17 and 18 rebounds in her previous three games. WNBA – Caitlin Clark and Napheesa Collier chosen as captains of WNBA All-Star Game
Caitlin Clark and Napheesa Collier will captain the WNBA All-Star Game next month the league announced Sunday. Clark received 1,293,526 votes from fans while Collier had about 100,000 fewer. The pair will draft their fellow starters from a group that will be revealed on Monday. The Indiana Fever star, who is sidelined with a groin strain, is averaging 18.2 points and a career-high 8.9 assists per game. She also led the fan voting last season, her rookie year, but the All-Star format was the U.S. Olympic team playing against a select group of WNBA stars so no captains were chosen.
Golf – Aldrich Potgieter wins Rocket Classic on 5th playoff hole
Aldrich Potgieter made an 18-foot putt for birdie on the fifth playoff hole, outlasting Max Greyserman to win the Rocket Classic on Sunday. It was the longest playoff of the season on the PGA Tour. The 20-year-old from South Africa is the youngest player on the tour and its biggest hitter. He became the ninth player to win for the first time this season. Chris Kirk was eliminated from contention after failing to make a 4-foot putt on the second hole after pushing a 9-foot putt past the cup on the first extra hole with a chance to win the tournament. Potgieter, two strokes ahead entering the round, closed with a 3-under 69, and Greyserman and Kirk each shot 67.
Golf – South Korean duo win Dow Championship to deny Lexi Thompson a long-sought title
Somi Lee and Jin Hee Im are first-time winners on the LPGA. And the wait continues for Lexi Thompson’s next win. Lee poured in an 8-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole as she and Im won the Dow Championship. Thompson’s partner Megan Khang had a chance to extend the playoff. But her 5-foot birdie attempt was low all the way. Thompson has gone six years since her last LPGA win. She birdied the 18th in regulation as she and Khang shot 60 in fourballs. Lee and Im shot 62. The format switched to alternate shot for the playoff.

The Detroit Red Wings acquired John Gibson from the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday, a trade of the veteran goaltender that could start the dominos falling around the NHL with several teams looking for help in net. Detroit sent backup goalie Petr Mrazek, a 2027 second-round pick and a 2026 fourth-rounder to Anaheim for Gibson, whose name has been in trade rumors for several years. No salary was retained. Gibson, 31, has spent his first 12 years in the league with Anaheim. He started 28 games, compared to 49 for Dostal, last season, and he’s signed for two more at a salary cap hit of $6.4 million. Ducks GM Pat Verbeek worked under Yzerman for a decade, and the two began speaking about Gibson before the trade deadline in March. Injuries derailed a move then but set the table for the western Pennsylvania native to go to Hockeytown.

Hall of Fame horse trainer D. Wayne Lukas has died. He was 89. His family says Lukas died at his home Saturday night. Lukas had been hospitalized with a severe MRSA blood infection that caused significant damage to his heart and digestive system and worsened pre-existing chronic conditions. Lukas won 15 Triple Crown races, including the Kentucky Derby four times. Only good friend Bob Baffert had more Triple Crown victories. The beloved, old-school trainer known affectionately as “Coach” was still getting on the pony himself in the morning for workouts even with his 90th birthday approaching.

LeBron James is exercising his $52.6 million option with the Los Angeles Lakers for 2025-26, further confirming that he will become the first player in NBA history to play a 23rd season, a person with knowledge of the decision said Sunday. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because neither James nor the team announced the decision publicly. ESPN and The Athletic were among those to first report the decision. James turns 41 in December. He’s been an All-NBA pick in 21 of his 22 seasons in the league.
NBA – Pistons FA Malik Beasley under investigation regarding gambling allegations
NBA free agent Malik Beasley is under investigation by the U.S. District Attorney’s office regarding gambling allegations tied to league games, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Sunday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment on the matter. “We are cooperating with the federal prosecutors’ investigation,” NBA spokesman Mike Bass said in a statement released to the AP and other outlets on Sunday. The probe into Beasley comes 14 months after the NBA banned Toronto’s Jontay Porter, who was linked to a prop bet investigation and eventually pleaded guilty to committing wire fraud.
