Joyce J. Short, 84, of Cassopolis, passed away early Wednesday morning, June 18, 2025, at Corewell Health Niles Hospital in Niles, MI.
Joyce was born on June 4, 1941, in Dowagiac, the daughter of the late DeWitt and Lena (Edmunds) Deuel and was a 1959 graduate of Dowagiac Union High School. On April 4, 1959, she was united in marriage to Robert C. Short. Joyce loved to bake and was known for her drop donuts and amazing cookies. She loved to read and to go out to dinner with family and friends. Most of all, she loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and all those who knew her and affectionately referred to her as “Granny”.
Surviving are her two children, Robert Jr (Charlene) Short and Shari (David) Pond; six grandchildren, Joshua (Doris) Bissenden, Zachary (Jessica) Bissenden, Matthew (Amanda) Short, Rebecca (Paul) Nitka, Scott (Chasity) Pond, and Shawn Pond; ten great-grandchildren, Charlie Short, Pius, Isabel, Tayeb, Ayden, Hannah, Kaleb, Kelin, Blake and Harper; three siblings, Gerald (Mary Lou) Deuel, Margaret (Jerry) Wilson and Judy (Denny Edgdahl) Rohlfs; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her husband of 64 years, Robert Short Sr; parents; eleven siblings, Russell Deuel, Leona “Faye” Bement, Paul Deuel, Dwanye Deuel, Floyd Deuel, Lloyd Deuel, Thelma Davis, Paul Deuel, Doris VanDyken, Barbara Garrelts and Phillip Deuel.
A Celebration of Life gathering will be held from 2-5pm on Saturday, Aug. 9, at Dowagiac Moose #933, 54867 M-51 N, Dowagiac.
