Michigan’s infant mortality rate is improving, but experts say there’s still work to do.

The Healthy Moms, Healthy Babies initiative was launched in 2021 and since then, Michigan has recorded its lowest infant mortality rate in state history. Dr. Dawn Schonfeld is the director of Maternal and Infant Health with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and told us more.

Included in that initiative are things such as Medicaid reimbursement for dual-lift services that went into effect in January of 2023, funding for centering pregnancy, an evidence-based group prenatal care model that’s shown or proven outcomes to reduce the number of low-birthweight babies,” Schonfeld said.

Researchers say over the past few years, a focus on resources to keep moms and babies healthy is working and paying off.
