MDOT to start M-40 project near Gobles Monday

The Michigan Department of Transportation is about to begin a $2.1 million culvert replacement along M-40 near Gobles, and it’s going to affect traffic.

MDOT spokesperson Nick Schirripa tells us they’re replacing the Brandywine Creek culvert under M-40 near 24th Avenue.

We have to replace it,” Schirripa said. “It goes across the entire roadway and the road has to come out in order to do it. So, unfortunately, it will require a total closure. It’s a two-month, a little over two months, total closure.”

Schirripa says M-40 and 24th Avenue will be closed during construction. There will be detours posted.

It certainly is an impactful project because we’re not just talking about replacing a culvert, but when something that involves a total closure like this, obviously a couple months, people are going to change what is assuredly a daily habit, a driving routine.”

The project will include hot-mix asphalt reconstruction, the culvert replacement, drainage upgrades, guardrail improvements, signs, and pavement markings on M-40. Work starts Monday and will continue for about two months.

Schirripa says the new culvert will last 50 to 100 years, helping with Brandywine Lake levels.
